False-Heads are a trio from London who are currently writing and performing some really great alternative punk and they just came out with their debut EP Tunnel Vision. It is available to buy on I-tunes, amazon, bandcamp, and www.hi4headrecords.com. If you are in London town, it is also available at Rough Trade Records east.
False-Heads is comprised of Luke Griffiths (Vocals, Guitar), Jake Elliott (Bass) and Daniel Delgaty (Drums).
I caught up with Luke and I'm glad he was able to answer a few quesitons.
WMB: What goals do you guys have as a band this year?
LG: We just hope to play as many decent gigs as possible. Have around 15-20 songs properly tight so we can change our set up when need be and have a long song choice for upcoming EP’s and singles. I think that’s important to have songs to choose from when making a record. It makes you pick the very best possible I find. We also hope that the official release of Tunnel Vision gets a good response and gets us some more exposure really. We do want another EP out by the end of the year and perhaps a few single releases but we are going to be heavily promoting Tunnel Vision for a while.
WMB: Now that you guys have settled on being a trio – has that changed the direction of the band at all?
LG: Not really. We had so many people coming in and out and so much fucking aggravation in the band for a few months. It’s nice that Jake and I have finally settled on a drummer from our home town (who was also a friend) and not West Sussex and York where we lived for university. Jake still helps me write some guitar parts, we just work around it for live situations. The four piece stint with Jake on guitar wasn’t really working too well and we never even managed to play live with it and the rehearsals and live shows with Jake on bass as a three piece have been great so we’re finding it much better. Musically the direction is the same really - we still work the same way. I have a basis for a song and take it to Jake and we work on it. It’s possible the bass will become a more driving force but it already was in most songs anyway.
WMB: If you could have a dream tour or festival to play – who else would be there (can be past or present bands)?
LG: Elliot Smith, Radiohead, The Pixies, Nirvana, The Beatles, The Clash, The Sex Pistols and Bob Dylan. I’d like the play with early Muse as well.
WMB: How is the scene in London – have you met some other cool bands or has it been difficult to break through?
LG: There isn’t really a scene in London or Essex to be honest. We have met a handful of cool bands and promotion companies in London who we really like and you can tell they really give a fuck about music and they probably know who they are. We do really appreciate working with people like that. However, London is full of promoters that just do not care. They don’t show up to the night, they don’t give a shit what music you play and put you on with bands that sound nothing like you and they ask you to buy tickets off them and sell them. It’s fucking disgusting and we just don’t play with promoters like that anymore.
At the start it’s difficult because you just want to play so you end up getting mugged off a bit by people like that but luckily we’ve found decent promoters and stuff to work with the last year or so. I think the vast amount of London promoters that don’t care about music and just want to rip off small bands has led to London not having a decent scene in my opinion. Especially compared to places like Brighton where there does seem to be a scene. That’s the impression we’ve had from playing in London and Brighton anyway.
WMB: Since you guys are a true indie band and self-supported…besides obviously buying your music – what are other good ways to support – social media, sharing, merch – seeing a live show?
LG: We are kind of half self-supported now haha. We have signed to a small label based in Essex called Hi4Head Records who are releasing our EP. It is now available to buy on I-tunes, amazon, bandcamp and you can buy a physical copy from their website and in Rough Trade Records in London and some other stores that will be listed on our Facebook.
