BAD NERVES (W2)
Essex five-piece Bad Nerves make the kind of rock music that seems physically incapable of standing still. Frontman Bobby Bird is joined by guitarists Will Phillipson and George Berry, bassist Jon Poulton and drummer Sam Thompson, creating a collision of power pop, garage rock and breakneck punk. Their songs may be fast and unruly, but beneath the distortion are huge melodies designed to stay in your head. After touring with artists including The Hives, Green Day, Weezer, Royal Blood and Nothing But Thieves, Bad Nerves will bring their high-speed live show to ACL Festival during weekend 2.

👂First Impression:
Bad Nerves immediately sounded like a harder, faster version of The Strokes. There is a similar garage-rock swagger in the guitars and vocals, but everything feels pushed into overdrive. The songs arrive in a rush of distortion, relentless drums and hooks that barely give you time to catch your breath before the next one begins.
What keeps their music from becoming pure chaos is how melodic it remains. Bad Nerves may play with punk intensity, but they understand the power of a memorable chorus. Even at their loudest and fastest, the songs are catchy enough to pull you back in.

“Don’t Stop”
“Don’t Stop” wastes no time living up to its title. The opening track from Still Nervous launches forward with pounding drums, racing guitars and barely contained momentum. It feels urgent from the first second, but the melodic bridge reveals more depth beneath the initial blast of adrenaline.
This was the song that made Bad Nerves click for me. It captures everything they do well in one compact burst: speed, distortion, melody and a chorus that makes you want to keep turning it up.
🎼What I Hear:
The easiest entry point may be The Strokes, especially in Bobby Bird’s vocal delivery and the band’s garage-rock style, but Bad Nerves operate at an entirely different speed. Imagine taking that early-2000s cool and throwing it into a room with the Ramones, Buzzcocks and The Hives.
💿The Evolution:
Bad Nerves formed around 2016 and released their self-titled debut album in 2020. That record established their fast, scrappy approach to punk and garage rock, while 2024’s Still Nervous expanded the formula with more intricate guitar work and a slightly broader emotional range without sacrificing the band’s urgency.
Their newest single, “NETWORK,” continues their high-speed approach while opening the next chapter beyond Still Nervous. It gives longtime listeners something new while preserving the frantic energy and melodic instincts that make the band immediately recognizable.

Bad Nerves sound like a band determined to prove guitar music can still feel immediate, dangerous and ridiculously full of energy. They have the hallmarks of a power-pop band, the attitude of garage rock and the velocity of old-school punk.

Their ACL set has the potential to become one of those afternoon performances where a curious crowd turns into a moving, sweaty mass by the second song. There is no slow introduction and very little room to breathe. I have a feeling Bad Nerves will hit the accelerator immediately and rarely take their foot off the gas during the entire set.
