CMAT
Irish singer-songwriter CMAT, born Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, makes country-pop for people who like their heartbreak served with humor, drama and a little bit of chaos. Her songs can be funny, theatrical and instantly catchy, but there is almost always something much more vulnerable underneath. Her third album, EURO-COUNTRY, has pushed her well beyond cult-favorite status and introduced her fearless songwriting to a much wider audience. 👂First Impression:
CMAT does not ease quietly into a song. Whether she is delivering a huge chorus, a painfully specific lyric or a line that makes you laugh before you realize how sad it actually is, she commits to every moment. My first impression was that she was colorful, confident and slightly over-the-top in the best possible way. The more I listened, the more I realized the theatricality is not there to distract from the emotion. It is how she delivers it.
That contrast is what makes her so interesting. Her music can feel playful and dramatic on the surface, while the lyrics explore insecurity, grief, relationships, identity and the pressure to become the version of yourself everyone else expects. She is funny without hiding behind the joke and vulnerable without losing her sense of spectacle.

“Ready” is the song that immediately pulled me into EURO-COUNTRY. It is bright, uplifting and built around the feeling of finally stepping out of the waiting room of your own life. CMAT sits somewhere between modern country-pop, classic storytelling and theatrical indie-pop. I hear Kacey Musgraves in the way she can make a sharp observation sound effortless, Dolly Parton in the humor, emotional clarity and commitment to the story, and Kate Bush in the fearless performance style that makes every song feel like its own world.
💿The Evolution:
CMAT’s 2022 debut, If My Wife New I’d Be Dead, introduced her country-pop foundation, quick wit and ability to turn personal disasters into irresistible songs. It established an artist with a clear personality from the beginning, one who could be self-deprecating and completely confident at the same time.
Crazymad, for me, expanded that world. The arrangements became more cinematic, the emotions became bigger and the storytelling grew more ambitious. Songs like “Stay for Something” showed that beneath the humor and visual camp was a songwriter who could land a genuinely devastating line.
On EURO-COUNTRY, everything feels wider in scope. She still writes about relationships and insecurity, but the album also reaches into Irish identity, grief, body image, capitalism and the lasting effects of economic instability. It is more political and reflective without losing the hooks, humor or theatrical energy that made her stand out in the first place.
💭 WAALT Take:
CMAT may first catch your attention with the red hair, dramatic outfits, humor and enormous personality, but the songs are the reason to stay. She can make you laugh, sing along and then quietly realize a lyric hit much harder than expected.
