BALU BRIGADA
Auckland, New Zealand brothers Henry and Pierre Beasley make up Balu Brigada, a genre-blending duo whose rhythm-driven indie pop combines elastic basslines, offbeat vocals, hazy production and an effortlessly laid-back feel. Their breakout hit “So Cold” introduced them to a much wider audience, while their debut album, Portal, proves there is plenty more to explore. Balu Brigada will bring their energetic sound to ACL Festival during both weekends, and their set is sure to be filled with the kind of energy that gets an afternoon festival crowd moving.
👂First Impression:
“That groove.”
The first time I heard “Backseat,” I was immediately pulled in by how extremely cool it feels. It is catchy and vibey, with an easy, danceable pulse that makes it nearly impossible to sit still.
▶ Start Here:
“Backseat”
The bassline drives the song, but it is the combination of conversational vocals, shifting textures and a smooth indie-pop groove that makes it stand out. As the song opens up, flashes of psychedelic production add another layer without disrupting its relaxed flow. It feels made for warm weather, open windows and a festival crowd ready to move. At more than six minutes, the track never overstays its welcome, building toward a killer outro and delivering some of Balu Brigada’s strongest Tame Impala-style vibes.
🎼What I Hear:
RIYL: Tame Impala • Phoenix • Foster the People
Overall Sound: Bass-forward indie pop with dreamy synths, subtle psych-rock flourishes, understated vocals and sleek production that still feels loose and spontaneous.
💿The Evolution:
Balu Brigada spent years developing their sound before “So Cold” became their breakout moment. Their earlier releases leaned into relaxed, genre-blending indie pop, but Portal feels more confident and fully realized. The album expands their palette with bigger hooks, sharper production and more experimentation while keeping the groove and brotherly chemistry at the center.
💭 WAALT Take:
Balu Brigada sits in a sweet spot between psych-pop, indie rock and danceable alternative music. At times, I hear the hazy production of Tame Impala, while “So Cold” feels like a combination of Phoenix’s polished indie-pop bounce and Foster the People’s quirky, bass-driven edge. What keeps them from sounding like a collection of influences is the distinct personality they bring to every track. Their music is stylish and light on its feet, but there is enough movement and unpredictability beneath the surface to keep it interesting. They sound built for a live festival setting, and I have a feeling their ACL set will win over plenty of people who arrive knowing only one song.
